Synchronous reluctance motors are based on a relatively young motor technology and are not common across the whole market. But they offer good performance similar to permanent magnet synchronous motors yet are not dependent on rare magnet material. The synchronous reluctance motor works on the same principle as the permanent magnet synchronous motor, but it does not require expensive magnets, which depend on rare earths. Therefore, the synchronous reluctance motor has the potential to be manufactured in mass production more cheaply or at least cost neutral with regard to the ASM but can also deliver even better efficiency in the partial load range.

With a motor-mounted variable frequency drive such as the KOSTAL INVEOR M, the synchronous reluctance motor can now be optimised even further. So the smart control technology of our drive technology adds a multitude of new application areas:

Synchronous reluctance motors with assistance magnets bridge the gap between synchronous reluctance motors and permanently excited synchronous motors with internal magnets. They are used in pumps and fans and display even greater efficiency compared with the normal synchronous reluctance motor. They are also cheaper than permanent magnet synchronous motors because ferrite magnets are used instead of rare earths. In terms of control technology, however, they are also among the more complicated types of electrical drives.

With a motor-mounted variable frequency drive from the KOSTAL INVEOR series, however, you need not concern yourself with this complexity. Because our variable frequency drives also control this type of motor with maximum efficiency, high dynamics and without any sensors whatsoever. At the same time, with this type of motor, you are already fully prepared for future requirements.
